Disseminating the Political

Godaam, literally means ‘storehouse’ in English. It attempts to ascribe new meanings to the vocabulary of collecting and cataloguing images and texts, one that is active with multiple nodes of interaction in the processes of collection, dissemination and production.

The resources are mobilised and collected through various sources, both conventional such as film rushes and news footage and unconventional, unsuspected sources such as fire brigade footage, surveillance camera outputs and the likes. Material is also mobilized by initiating new projects with various niche groups, bringing in diverse perspectives to the collection.

Presently the collection comprises of two sections: Bombay and Kashmir. We hope to have students, film makers, researchers and anyone interested in such an initiative to engage with this resource base. We encourage people to develop a reciprocal relationship with the archive.

On Bombay , we have a small diverse collection – on the mill areas, the '92-93 riots, roadside shrines of Bombay, the 2004 elections, cemeteries of different communities, assorted interviews of citizens, fish markets and fisher folk, testimonies of banned bar dancers, footage from the fire brigade etc.
Videography as a primary form of information in India seems to have roughly coincided with the beginnings of sustained violence in the Kashmir Valley, some 17 years ago. We are slowly working on a collection that will look at different representations of Kashmir from this period as well as contextualise it within a much broader, sustained discourse on Kashmir as an object/ place/scene of fantasy and desire.
