The litigation unit of Majlis aims to
fulfill this ‘need of the hour’ by representing
women across class and community in trial court
litigation. An all women team of lawyers
represents needy women and children in family
disputes, work related issues and broader
concerns of civil and political rights
|
|
and
secure for them their basic rights to life,
liberty and dignity.
We term the activity of defending the rights of
women as ‘feminist lawyering’. Since its
inception in 1989, the legal centre has been
|
|
representing women in Mumbai in the then newly
set up Family Courts, the High Court and the
District and Civil Courts at Thane. In 2000, a
branch office was started in Nagpur.
The aim of the routine trial court litigation: |
 |
|
- to
secure the rights of individual women through
court interventions
- to create positive legal precedents
- to bring in a culture of women’s rights within
court precincts |
