Legal advocacy and litigation in lower
courts forms the spine of the comprehensive
women’s rights programme. We function with a
basic premise of empowering women through
litigation. Conventionally, matrimonial law
revolves around some basic rights such as
divorce, custody of children and maintenance.
The challenge before us is to expand the
boundaries of law to create newer spaces for
women within the realm of civil rights in trial
courts. Matrimonial laws are archaic and were
formulated within a patriarchal and feudal
economic order and hence they fail to address
the concerns of contemporary women of urban
India. Our endeavour has been to re-negotiate
women’s rights within the framework of their
contemporary reality, not only within
matrimonial laws but also into other areas which
affect the rights of women and children.
