An important intervention has been in the area
of protecting children against sexual abuse. While handling
matrimonial matters, we have come across several cases of children who
have been sexually abused by their own fathers or a close male
relative. As lawyers practicing in the realm of civil law, our
challenge has been to protect the rights of children against the
abusers |
and prevent the courts from granting orders of
access to the abuser.
These cases have
been the most difficult to deal with, as even
the courts are reluctant to admit that incest is
rampant within middle class Indian homes and are
not generally inclined to pass restraining
orders and ouster injunctions against the
violators.
|
Based on our experiences from this case, we
launched a nation wide media campaign on the
issue of child sexual abuse and as part of the
campaign, we also produced Colours Black,
a documentary film on the issue. The focus was to pierce the veil of
shame and silence, which envelops this heinous crime and permits it to
flourish within the dark crevices of domestic tranquility.
