While individual and class action legal
initiatives have been the central focus of the
Legal Centre, we realize that unless a culture
of rights is created within the society, it is
not possible to safeguards women’s rights.
Women’s concerns are also integrally linked to
other civil and political rights and hence they
cannot be defended in isolation. Hence it is
important to place women’s rights within a
broader canvas of democratic rights. Minority
rights and rights of citizens who are outside of
the dominant milieu, need to be nurtured through
a comprehensive theoretical and strategic
framework. Public campaigns around strategic
concerns need to be initiated through sustained
efforts and co-ordination between social action
groups so that the rights become a norm rather
than an isolated incident of a chance victory in
a contested legal battle. It is in this context
that we view litigation in defense of individual
women, public interest litigation and public
campaign as a continuum of our concern to ensure
broader democratic ethos within our society. |
