The play is an adaptation of the 4th century (BC)
Greek classic Lysistrata by Aristophanes. The
production of Aaj Pyaar Bandh stemmed from the
violence of the Gulf war of 1991 and the violence
centered around the Mandal Commission report (a
recommendation of reservation policy for backward
communities) in 1990-91.
The bawdy political satire of Aristophanes of
countering war mongers’ cowardice violence with
non-violent assertion of female sexual power made the
two thousand four hundred years old play a runaway
success.
