This unique project of training and fellowships to
women lawyers was initiated in 2003. The main aim of
the project was to disseminate legal literacy to
women in rural areas and to help them access the
formal justice delivery system. This was to be
achieved through training and sensitizing women
lawyers from district towns and awarding annual
fellowships to a select few among them. The
programme has had ripple effect throughout the State
of Maharashtra and has helped to strengthen women’s
rights and human rights in smaller cities and
district towns. Every year around 80-100 women
lawyers were given training and orientation. From
this larger group around 10-12 lawyers were selected
for an annual fellowship. At the conclusion of the
four years of this project, we have brought out a
report titled, Access to Justice.
